Who is the Flying Astronomer?
John Rowlands
Flying Astronomer is a family-run business owned by Astronomy Now magazine contributor for over 20 years – John Rowlands (right). We became nick-named as Flying Astronomer in the pages of the magazine, as John is a pilot as well as an astronomer, so we decided to call the business by the same name!
John is a qualified astronomer and has over 20 years experience working with scientific optical equipment.

At Flying Astronomer, we realize that a number of our clients are just starting-out in astronomy, and may not always wish to spend a lot of money initially. We specialize in telescopes for all levels of ability, and take particular care with beginners, to ensure you choose a telescope that encourages your early interest in astronomy.
Sadly, buying from a high street or catalogue store usually means you get a very poor-performing, over-priced toy that will lead to disappointment. At Flying Astronomer, we check all products sold to see whether they perform adequately. If not, we don’t stock it – simple as that!
We specialize in Skywatcher, Tal, Helios, Acuter and Zenith instruments because they deliver excellent performance at a sensible price.
